Virginia Military Institute
In November of 2007, Valley Arts Publishing was granted permission to reproduce certain paintings from the Robert A. Raeburn ’51 Collection of Civil War Art by the VMI Museum.  This collection focuses attention on the individual Civil War soldier rather than great battle depictions.  Artists with first-hand knowledge of their subject painted all of the pieces during the years immediately following the war.  Noted artists Julian Scott, Edwin Forbes, E. L. Henry, and John Rodgers are represented in the collection.

Robert A. Raeburn matriculated at VMI with the class of 1951 from his home in New York, New York.  Active in sports as a cadet, Mr. Raeburn graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.  After a brief tour of duty with the Air Force, he returned to the family business of N. S. Meyer.  Mr. Raeburn presented this important collection to the Virginia Military Institute on the occasion of the 50th Reunion of his VMI Class.
